Separation is a difficult time and it is very normal to feel stressed and upset. Separation & Stress go hand in hand. Finding ways to manage these feelings is an important part of moving on and recovery to feel better about yourself; and your situation.
Sometimes, it can be difficult to know if you’re feeling is normal or something that you should get help with during separation.
Are you suffering under the stress of separation?
- Feeling overwhelmed?
- Having trouble concentrating?
- Irritable or anxious all the time?
- Having difficulty sleeping?
- Feeling moody and easily frustrated?
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms then you might need to get help or make changes to your day-to-day life and break up the routine for something new.
It is important to remember that stress is normal, but if you feel stressed all the time and have been living with these symptoms for a while, it can lead to depression and other mental health issues in the future. Beware of the danger signs.
What can you do?
LOOK AFTER YOURSELF!
Learn about your stressors and put changes in place to avoid them
Overuse of alcohol or medications usually make the situation much worse
Operate in a positive way with a positive mindset
Keep focussing on the good, even in difficult situations
Accept the things that cant be changed, and change those that can
Find some time to relax
Talk to a friend, family member or a professional (such as your Doctor)
Eat healthy meals
Realise that with time, things will eventually get better
You can make a list of everything you enjoy doing
Ordinary is OK, lower the bar slightly
Understand your body and when it needs help
Realise that there are only so many hours in a day
Seek the assistance of a Doctor or counsellor
Energise with gentle exercises like a walk, jog or bike ride
Look for ways to alter the situation and adapt to the stressors your face
Find a way to break your bigger goals into smaller steps
Mostly, keep in mind that you can’t give your best for your kids if you don’t look after yourself too!
Who can help with your separation stress?
If nothing seems to help, maybe it’s time to speak with someone about how you are feeling.
If you’re not comfortable talking to a friend or family member, then making an appointment to see a counsellor or doctor may be your best solution.
